Prevent Craft Based Injuries!

Everyone seemed to enjoy the benefits of knitting article I posted on the social media sites (Facebook & Twitter) but I want to discuss the flip side to it, the injuries it can cause. An I'm not reffering to the pointy end of a knitting needle.....

The holiday season is upon us crafter's!

This means late night knitting and crocheting and panic making things whilst trying to multi-task everything else!

Now I suffer from pains in my neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, fingers, pins-and-needles and numbness. All craft related. I'm only 25, my crafty career is not going to last the year if I don't start looking after my tools properly!

Working a lot can put terrible strain on our joints, (I learnt how to knit as a result of my Nan no longer being able to due to her arthritis) and after having such a busy commission week I am in agony, so taking care of yourself during the biggest crafting season is very important!

Beware of RSI

Below are some links that should help prevent injury because you have to ask yourself this; if you couldn't craft, what else would you do?

My personal favourite for crochet advise is this Pinterest board I follow - CROCHET.without.injury

Take care of yourself! I'm off on my holidays till Saturday and I have banned myself from crafting to allow my aches and pains to heal....I'll have twitching fingers by Wednesday.

Do you have any advice that you swear by?

Bella Nuvia Open Day

Last Sunday, 21st September, I dragged (and I mean dragged as the wheel broke off halfway there and all the springs popped out so now its a death trap!) my owl wheels full of craftiness to Bella Nuvia in Oxton for a day of wedding DIY crafts :)

It was a fab day and I decorated downstairs in just a few ideas for wedding decorations that could be done yourself whilst together look amazing!

It was lovely talking to so many brides who are having a hand crafted element to their wedding from their own flowers to decorations! Definitely the majority!

The biggest constraint on a bride-to-be is time so a fair few had brought their bridesmaids along since for a lot they where taking the crafty reigns!

The most popular items of the day where the rolled paper flowers whilst the slide show provided no end of inspiration and ideas.

If I ever get married I don't know how I'd have my wedding as there are just too many fantastic ideas out there!

I met some lovely local businesses as well from the fantastic hairdressers at Gossip, the lovely ladies from Amberlight Images and the marvellous Victoria Blossom flowers. Between us we had nearly a whole wedding sorted!

I LOVE working with Natalie; even though we are two very different businesses we support each other as much as possible. You'll spot us working together again this Sunday at The Titanic Hotel in Liverpool as I'm giving her a hand whilst her dresses strut their stuff on the catwalk! Hopefully with models inside them or that would just be totally bizarre!

This Sunday!
In the next few weeks I'll be posting tutorials on all the wedding crafts featured on the day including;

* book roses
* rolled roses
* honeycomb pom-poms
* paper pom-poms
* pinwheels
* organza flowers

A big thanks to Natalie's Mum for a lift back to the train station with the bust bag!
Bust wheel & falling apart!

Did you have any handmade elements to your wedding?

There's a new adventurer in town....

I would like to introduce you all to my new logo for Girl On Purl Action by the very talented Orion
Zangara !

Isn't she awesome?!

My old logo had served me will since I launched the craft meetings over 2 years ago but I always felt that she didn't capture me or what my business was entirely about (although I had designed her)!

This logo suits my quirkiness whilst still capturing the retro and fun side to things. She is a girl of action, surviving with the tools of her trade and I'll be entirely honest that the Kraken style monster holds no symbolism other than this I really like pirate-y related things and this was what I've always wanted! :)

The other gal will still be around but I'm keeping her for all of my wedding related things (I have cake toppers coming soon!) as that's where she fits best :)

What do you think?

Ganthet's Big Day Out

I had a photo shoot by the wonderful Barbara Idasiak Photography at The Women's Organisation for a PR piece on my new business, Girl On Purl Action, last Thursday and I took along my little mascot Ganthet the hedgehog.

Now Ganthet normally does not go anywhere except his playpen, the couch, the bathroom, my Mum's (hotel time when we are on holiday) or (very infrequently thankfully!) the vets.

He was not too impressed at being woken up at 11 am, since he normally doesn't rise till about 7pm, but after a few meal-worm treats he was perfectly content.

"Mum I'm tired..."
In 'show biz' they always say the most difficult things to work with are children and animals. This was not 'show biz' but it was difficult. A normally very dopey and lazy Ganthet decided this was the best time to have his biggest surge of energy for the day and that I was the perfect climbing frame.

After multiple shots of his back or behind I don't think the final shot will contain him but it was worth a try none the less. Mega thanks to Barbara for her patience!

He'd fallen asleep before I even got him home! Must be exhausting flirting with all the ladies at The Women's Organisation!

"Night night!"

The pug purse and other problems....

A week ago I posted that a project I was working on was missing googly eyes and last night I tried to attach them to my pug coin purse!

Ruining my new dress as a pin cushion!

One thing I hate about projects is sewing them together! I have a box of things "to-be-sewn-up" and I always make the biggest pieces, that don't require sewing up, in projects first!

The placement of facial features is just the same...

The eyes have been in multiple places, sew on and removed countless times and I am still not happy with it!
Placement 1
Placement 2
Its just missing that little something so I tried adding more dark around the eyes which has helped but I'm still not happy.

The only time dark circles around the eyes work!

He needs a nose with a mouth that reaches so the original has been removed to be edited.

I'm also now thinking that the eyes with the added dark circles now need to be in the original eye position!

Blah.....I'll let you know how I get on....
The kitten (Tulip) thinks I'm demented...bit rich
The other issue is batteries!

So with 12 (TWELVE!!) new items to go on to the shop site I tootle down to the craft room to snap away and the batteries die on my camera. No bother I nip out the next day and buy some more.

Next opportunity to snap and I get 1 photo (I normally take 6-10 photo's of an item before I decide on the best) and the batteries go again.

I had used this camera for months, bought similar batteries but now apparently it wants shiny, kidney costing things so I'm off to the shops before work today to get some more...

Hoping to get everything up before I go to N.I.C.E comic con in Bedford this weekend.

An yes. I do get wool into comic cons ;)

"Charities should stick to knitting..."

The new minister for civil society, Brooks Newmark, has been anything but after The Guardian reported about his comments that "The important thing charities should be doing is sticking to their knitting and doing the best they can to promote their agenda, which should be about helping others."

Get a clue...

Newmark's comments were condemned as "patronising rubbish" by Lisa Nandy, the shadow minister for civil society. "It's his first speech as charities minister, and I think it's not just patronising but actually deeply offensive at a time when charities are picking up the pieces from this government's awful, unfair policies, that their ministers would talk about them in such a dismissive way," she said.

"This comes from a government that hasn't just introduced the Lobbying Act but has also restricted charities using judicial review, cut legal aid, ramped up employment tribunal fees and clamped down on immigration appeals. What you're looking at is a government that doesn't like challenge. That is quite a frightening place for a government to have got itself into."

Alexandra Runswick, director of Unlock Democracy, a campaign group, said charities "should be able to advocate, not just knit" and suggested that Newmark's tone was condescending. Frances Crook, chief executive of the Howard League for Penal Reform, also tweeted that it was "incredibly insulting for charities minister to tell civil society to 'stick to its knitting' and I think sexist too".

So...what do you think?

First off lets pick the argument apart without loosing context; "sticking to their knitting and doing the best they can to promote their agenda, which should be about helping others." Its this use of "AND DOING" that gets me....is knitting for a charity not helping others?

I firmly believe charities should have a say in politics as they often pick up the pieces when politics go wrong such as food banks after the recession, but focusing solely on the knitting aspect of this his comments imply an old stereotype of knitters being boring and typically of an older generation.

I'm 25. My best friend knits, she is a similar age. My cousins have just learnt, both mid-20's. My sister knit's, she's 21. But age is irrelevant....lets let the facts speak for themselves...

Last years Innocent Smoothie Big Knit campaign raised over £200,000 for the Age UK Spread The Warmth campaign.

Jolly, wonderful, enjoyed by so many & done so much good!

The NHS' Blood Doesn't Grow On Tree's campaign registered 8500 new donors (2000 over target) and use the tag line: "YARN-BOMBING IS THE ANSWER".

I was involved in this. It was fab!

Knitters are involved in politics too - http://www.woolagainstweapons.co.uk/

These are just some examples off the top of my head.

In a nut-shell, as far as a first speech goes, this is pathetic, charities should be praised regardless of what they do. Government should be working with charities to do their duty of care.

Personally I loved Knit For Peace's statement which you can view here.

Meet The Mascot!

After a great discussion at The Women's Organisation today in Liverpool (they are wonderful by the way so go and check them out!) I came to the conclusion that a more personal element would benefit my business. So I decided on a mascot, someone who in himself is probably more interesting than anything I do! My natural needle supplier (I know there called quills but try having one stick in your hand!)

Ganthet....

Ganthet is an 18 month old African Pygmy and Algerian Hedgehog cross, this isn't the little blue Guardian from The Green Lantern. He is classed as an exotic animal and needs to be kept warm at all times. He sleeps up to 20-22 hours a day and eats a mix of special cat biscuits and vegetables, his favourite are sweetcorn and broccoli.

He's supposed to run up 5 miles an evening in his wheel (its a ferret wheel) but rather goes for a leisurely stroll for about 5 minutes a couple of times an evening and has a particular liking for bleach-y smells....dunno why...

He does not like having a bath..

He's always been there to give me advice on, branding, marketing, new project ideas and colour combinations, (he has a good eye with his little ginger bands on his blonde quills) and is an excellent wool minder as it just sticks to his quills.
Anyway the point is you are gonna be seeing a whole lot more of him!

So everyone say hi!!

Hello everyone!

He is going to be joining me on a photo-shoot on the 18th of September and I think he will enjoy it as he has some good modelling poses...
